Rising sous-chef Kelly Matlock's sudden collapse at work is a wake-up call.
Disillusioned and burned out, she's retreated to her sister Jillian's house in Virgin River to rest and reevaluate. Puttering in Jill's garden and cooking with her heirloom vegetables is wonderful, but Virgin River is a far cry from San Francisco. Kelly's starting to feel a little too unmotivated. . . until she meets Lief Holbrook.
The handsome widower looks more like a lumberjack than a sophisticated screenwriter—a combination Kelly finds irresistible. But less appealing is Lief's rebellious stepdaughter, Courtney. She's the reason they moved from L. A. , but Courtney's finding plenty of trouble even in Virgin River.
Kelly's never fallen for a guy with such serious baggage, but some things are worth fighting for. Besides, a bratty teenager can't be any worse than a histrionic chef. . . right?

Compelling This easy to follow stand-alone is informative and entertaining. No violence or drag-you-down drama.Intriguing storyline with several scenarios that are skillfully woven together.
Believable characters with distinct personalities and realistic emotional baggage. Interesting, thought-provoking and snarky dialogue.
“Do you know anything about teenagers?” Jill asked.
"I was one once.” Kelly said. “That’s it.”
Courtney shrugged. “I really don’t. I just picked up a few things, that’s all. Besides, there’s nothing on TV anyway.”
"That’s a fact,” she said. “Nothing on that box worth watching day or night. Not unless you like those asinine real-life things.”
“You mean reality shows?” Courtney asked.
"Asinine, if you ask me. People shouldn’t be watching other people while they’re just living their lives or trying to solve their problems. And the very idea you choose a husband or a wife on the television! The very idea! What happened to acting? If there isn’t acting in it, I can’t be bothered.”
I will continually re-read this series.

Harvest Moon A Virgin River Novel Book 13 eBook Robyn Carr Reviews
Having got a tad ennui with some of books 5-12 of this series, I really loved this book. I loved the first four, and Noah and Ellie’s book, but the majority of the rest were fairly formulaic. This book really got back to what I loved about her books – the character development. And hardly a baby in sight! While the lead couple were fine, the undoubted star of the show was Courtney, and it was so great that half the novel was from her perspective. It was great to see life from the teenage perspective and Carr did this so well. Full marks!
This was a very interestesing book. Kelly was went up to Virgin River to relax and get her health and life back together after a collapse in the 5 star kitchen in San Fransico. Kelly met Lief a single stepfather who was raising a 14 year old girl who was trying to deal with the loss of her mother a year ago. Who was afraid Lief would send her back to her real father who didn't want her. who had to fight for her legally to keep her with him.
Kelly did the only thing she new how to do to perfection from all the scchools she had went to for trainning...to cook. and cook she did with a know all attitude which was rightfully hers.
I like the trails of the realtionship that Leif, Kelly and she had. It was so true to life that your heart just went out to them. I really enjoyed this book. 4.5 Stars
If you have loved Robyn Carr's books in the past, this book, "Harvest Moon" will surely not disappoint! The reader quickly gets caught up in the lives of the three main characters of the book--Kelly, Lief, and his step-daughter, Courtney. This is a very realistic book about the pressures of a demanding career, the choice to move out of "big town life" and the complications that arise in new relationships. I think Lief was an admirable character who had gone out of his way to tackle the tough job of raising the rebellious, teenage daughter of his his deceased wife. The reader will cheer as the relationship develops between Kelly and Lief. The reader will feel both empathy and a little frustration with the teenaged Courtney. The extra drama thrown in about Courtney's real dad keeps the plot moving until the final, much sought-after good ending. A very enjoyable weekend book to read! Enjoy!
I Love the Virgin River novels. I'm recovering from pneumonia and to keep still I got my out. Up popped Robin Carr when I texted in Christmas. So I'm reading all 20 all over again.
I actually got out a California/Oregon map and dream about visiting that area. Who knows maybe a little out of the way place might catch my attention.
I want to cook like Kelly and garden like Jilly.
Fish like the Riordan's.
Have friends like Jack.
Does anyone else put leading actors in these rolls when reading about them? 🤒
Jill's sister, Kelly has arrived in VR, after suffering from "kitchen fatigue". Here she first meets Lief at the Jack's bar and this morphs quickly into friends with benefits. While this relationship is progressing, Lief' s complicated arrangement with his dead wife's daughter goes out of kilter and slowly rights itself. Kelly finds herself cooking away her stress by producing amazing chutneys and jams from her sister's organic garden produce under her own label.
A lesson to learn here, for adults in love with small kids, get everything legal done today, as tomorrow is not guaranteed!
5/3/16
This is probably the seventh book I read of the series. Robyn Carr's strength is usually character development and believability. There was little believable for me about the relationship the sous chef Kelly had with her boss Luca that should have resulted in his wife threatening Kelly's job, and the speed with which she and the main love interest Lief hooked up was simply silly. Kelly felt essentially one dimensional and I was never able to develop an affinity with her or her issues. Lief is better developed and his challenges with his step-daughter Courtney seemed well defined and some emotional pull. But I simply thought Kelly was uninteresting and flat. Even her relationship with her sister Jillian didn't have emotional zing.
There is also little to zero secondary story line to provide flavor to the other characters pulled into the book, except somewhat for the shrink, Jerry. Colin, Jillian's husband isn't even more than a stick figure that occasionally pops up. We get cameos of Jack, Preacher, and Muriel St. Clair that simply serve to further a specific point in the book but if I didn't know who they were from prior books I wouldn't have any understanding of who they were or their relevance to the Virgin River community.
Very disappointing since my prior read right before this was Moonlight Path which I thought was very well done in character development and use of secondary characters.
